How Our Window & Door Installation Process Works
How Our Window & Door Installation Process Works
When you're replacing windows or doors, choosing the right product is only part of the project.
How that product is measured, reviewed, ordered, installed, flashed, insulated, and finished can be just as important as the name on the window or door.
At Elite Window & Door, installation isn't something we add onto the sale or hand off after the contract is signed. Installation is at the center of our process.
How Is Our Process Different?
Many large retailers, national window companies, and manufacturers offer a convenient one-stop experience. Depending on the company and market, the salesperson, measurement technician, ordering department, delivery team, installation company, and service department may all be different people or organizations.
That model can work well, but every additional handoff creates another opportunity for information to be missed.
Our process is intentionally different.
We manage the project around the installation from the beginning. That means the person selling the project isn't the final authority on whether a window or door will actually fit your home.
Before products are ordered, the project goes through a final measurement and technical review.
Step 1: Choose the Right Product
There isn't one window or door that's right for every homeowner.
Some projects call for a straightforward, value-focused product. Others require upgraded glass, fiberglass, wood-clad construction, custom sizing, premium finishes, or architectural options.
Because we work with multiple product options and manufacturers, we can help you compare products based on:
Budget
Material
Energy performance
Appearance
Warranty
Features
Customization
Long-term durability
Our goal isn't to force every homeowner into one product line. It's to find the product that makes sense for the home and the project.
Step 2: Final Measurements
Before we order custom windows or doors, an experienced field professional verifies the project.
This is more than simply measuring the width and height of the opening.
Depending on the project, we may verify things such as:
Exact unit dimensions
Opening conditions
Wall and jamb depth
Interior and exterior trim
Sill conditions
Door handing and swing
Installation method
Required flashing and waterproofing
Product configuration
Hardware
Access and jobsite conditions
The goal is simple: identify potential problems before the product is ordered instead of discovering them during installation.
Step 3: Project and Order Review
Final measurements become the basis for the order.
Before materials are released, we review the project again to make sure the products, measurements, options, and installation requirements match what was confirmed in the field.
Custom windows and doors can take weeks to manufacture, so catching an error before ordering can prevent significant delays later.
This extra review is one of the most important parts of our process.
Step 4: Ordering and Delivery
Once the project has been reviewed and approved, the products are ordered.
Our team manages the order and coordinates material availability and delivery for the project.
When materials arrive, we can verify that the products required for installation are available before the installation is scheduled.
The homeowner shouldn't have to coordinate between a salesperson, supplier, manufacturer, and installer to figure out who is responsible for a missing or incorrect item.
Step 5: Installation
Our installation standards have been developed through years of installing windows and doors and refined using manufacturer requirements, building practices, and applicable code requirements.
While every home and product is different, the basic goal remains the same:
Control water. Control air. Control temperature. Support the product correctly.
A typical installation may include:
Preparing and inspecting the opening
Correctly positioning and fastening the new unit
Flashing and waterproofing the opening
Insulating around the window or door
Air-sealing the installation
Installing or replacing appropriate trim
Exterior sealing and finishing
Adjusting and testing the product
Cleaning the work area
We don't believe a premium window can compensate for a poor installation.
A properly installed mid-range product can often be a better investment than an expensive product installed incorrectly.
Waterproofing Matters
Water management is one of the most important parts of a window or door installation.
Caulk alone should not be the home's only defense against water.
Our installation methods are designed around proper flashing, drainage, and exterior sealing so that the opening has multiple layers of protection when the conditions of the home allow for it.
The exact method can vary depending on the existing construction, siding, opening, and product being installed.
That's why we determine the installation method before the project begins.
Air Sealing and Insulation Matter Too
A new energy-efficient window won't perform as intended if air can move around the frame.
The space between the new unit and the opening needs to be properly insulated and air-sealed.
This helps reduce drafts and allows the window or door to perform much closer to the way it was designed and tested.
Manufacturer Requirements Still Matter
Every manufacturer has installation requirements that must be followed to protect product performance and warranty coverage.
Our standards don't replace those requirements.
They build upon them.
When a manufacturer's instructions require a particular fastening method, flashing detail, clearance, or installation procedure, those requirements become part of the project.
The goal is an installation that both we and the manufacturer can stand behind.
What Happens After Installation?
Before completing the project, the installed products are operated, adjusted, and reviewed.
Windows should open, close, lock, and operate correctly. Doors should swing properly, latch correctly, seal against the weatherstripping, and operate as intended.
If something requires adjustment or service, we want to identify it.
And if a manufacturer warranty issue develops later, you're not left trying to determine whether you should call the retailer, manufacturer, salesperson, or installation subcontractor.
You call us.
Why We Put So Much Emphasis on Installation
Homeowners naturally spend a lot of time comparing window and door brands.
That's important.
But two identical windows installed by two different companies can produce very different long-term results.
The product matters.
The installation matters just as much.
That's why our process starts with understanding the home, verifying the project in the field, reviewing the order before purchase, and installing every product using a defined installation standard.
If you're comparing replacement windows or doors in Michigan, compare more than the label on the product.
Ask who is measuring it, who is installing it, how the opening will be waterproofed, and who will be responsible if something goes wrong.
Those answers can tell you as much about the project as the window or door itself.
